THE AMERICAS AND EUROPE
paragon-agate-beadsBEADS AND DOMED DRYHEAD SPECIMEN of Paragon agate, cut in Idar-Oberstein; largest bead is 1.6 cm diameter. In the middle 1980s, the firm selling these beads used Hong Kong and German beadmakers, reserving the best material for cutting in Germany. Now, most semi-precious stone beads are cut in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China, and India. Courtesy of Jan Daggett.
CONTEMPORARY VENETIAN LAMPWORK BEAD (below) with fine trail decorating, both raised and flush. Raised decorations are usually abraded in Venetian beads from Africa. The bead is matte finished by acid etching; the Czechs achieve the same effect through tumbling. Courtesy of Picard African Imports.
