Stories are a necessary part of the human experience. From shadows around the first nighttime fire to fairytales heard in our crib, humans have turned to story to organize and inspire our lives. We identify with every hero, princess, trickster and even the occasional frustrated witch in each fable; and these characters allow us to live out all the different parts of ourselves. They help us encounter the magic of everyday life in a fantastical form: a difficult problem becomes a dragon or an overbearing parent a wicked stepmother. We need these stories to understand ourselves and our challenges, as we change roles throughout the different phases of our lives. They show us where we have been, what we are and, most important, who we are becoming.
